<itunes:summary>Two Harvard kids formed together a group called Chester French. After getting signed by Pharrell's Star Trak label, these guys have gotten real popular over the past year. For some reason, people into hip hop really like these guys. I don't understand it yet but needless to say I've been bumpin their catchy indie pop music for a few months now.</itunes:summary>

I must admit I was not a Zion I fan at all before I listened to this album but Zumbi and AmpLive switched up their style away from the hyphy/thizz music that has dominated the Bay for a while now. What I hear now is a diverse collection of music with smooth, soulful beats and socially conscious lyrics. "The Take Over" will be in stores on 2/17.

After my first listen, I really noticed this artist's versatility between different genres. The songs also flow pretty well from track to track. This mixtape is one of the few ones I've listened to where I can listen to the whole thing without skipping any tracks. Definitely worth the listen.

I've been following this guy for about a year ever since he came out with the mixtape, "Atmosphere Airlines Vol. 1", which reached a good amount critical acclaim - at least in underground hip hop. Last month he released a sequel to Atmosphere Airlines and had songs featuring Biggie, Talib Kweli, Supastition, Aloe Black, CL Smooth, J-Live, and more. Blu is one of the upcoming artists out of LA who's put together albums in his groups C.R.A.C. and Johnson&Jonson as well as a solo album in the past year and a half.

I'd heard one of their songs (Wolf Like Me) on a Friday Night Lights episode a little while ago, but other than that I hadn't been exposed to them at all. Well after listening to this album from start to finish, I can see why critics are univerally regarding this album as one of the top ones of the year. I can't put my finger on what type of genre they are...and I think that's a good thing. They're indie, alternative rock, jazz, funk...I could go on forever. Just listen

<itunes:summary>This is a few months old but it's almost a crime that I never dropped the first single off of might Mos' upcoming 4th solo LP called The Ecstatic. There are only a few artists who I anxiously wait around months in advance for their albums to drop. Mos Def is one of those artists. Both this single and his second single, Quiet Dog, can be purchased on iTunes.</itunes:summary>

Solange - Sand Castles Remix f/ Theophilus London

<img src="http://dwil2750.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1109489/0x0_1525896.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />This joint produced by Machine Drum is a remix of my favorite song off of Solange's sophomore album, Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams. This album showed the artist's progression from just Beyonce's little sister to an energetic, soulful artist in her own right. Theophilus London is an artist to look out for as he's got the passion and energy to do some great things in the music industry.

The former A Tribe Called Quest only has one official released solo album but has quite a resume to back him up. I've heard a few songs off the Renaissance already. Looks like this could be one of my favorites of '08 (though Fun DMC is still the undisputed #1).

<itunes:summary>Vanilla Thrilla + Timmy T = The Odd Couple. This new group from St. Louis only has a few songs so far, but it's always refreshing to hear rappers talk about something I can actually relate to. Their beats are pretty good too.

The Roots - What They Do

<img src="http://dwil2750.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/1109489/0x0_873273.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />With my second installment of "The Roots Week," here's one of the singles off of The Roots' third album entitled illadelph halflife. Like their second LP, this album was critically acclaimed as one of The Source Magazine's Best 100 Rap Albums of all time.

Unlike their first two albums, illadelph highlife sounds much more like a gritty east coast album. Songs like Clones, Concerto of the Desperado, Episodes, and UNIverse at War are good examples of this change in style.

But this particular song, "What They Do", is more along the lines of a jazzy influence. With Rafael Saadiq on the hook, the listener can just mellow out to the vibe for the long 6-minute song. The music video is even better because it pokes fun at the cliches in popular rap videos such as showing off expensive cars and girls dancing with little or no clothes on - not that there's anything wrong with that : )

The Roots - Mellow My Man

With only a week left leading up the release of "Rising Down" by The Roots - one of the most-anticipated albums of 2008 - I'm going to take you on a musical journey throughout the history of The Roots - arguably my favorite musical group and the best I've ever seen in concert.

Their first album in 1993 called Organix sold out at shows in Europe and earned them a record deal in the US. One of the singles for Organix (Pass the Popcorn) can be found in an earlier post: http://dwil2750.podomatic.com/entry/2008-01-26T14_36_25-08_00

The Roots' second album really put them on the hip hop map. Their sophomore LP entitled "Do You Want More?!!!??!" was selected as one of The Source Magazine's 100 Best Rap Albums. With singles such as "Distortion To Static" and "Proceed", this hip hop band gained some steam in the US. But my particular favorite one on this 1995 album is "Mellow My Man". It's jazzy, it's fun, and puts you in the right mood...

Shadrach Kabango is a Canadian...rapper. I know it sounds weird, but he's a skilled emcee from London, Ontario. This song is from his album The Old Prince, which dropped in 2007. The album has drawn comparisons to Blu & Exile's "Below the Heavens"

Mickey Factz is putting out a lot of music in 2008, including this gem produced by the Neptunes. Anything with Pharrell on the track is gonna be hot...but that's just me.
